Service of Lights

Luminare

Procession of Light (lights down)

In the beginning was the Word.

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God,

Without him nothing was made.

In Him was light,

He is the light of all people.

Lighting Song

"When the Night Becomes Dark"

Taise

~ the Cantor will sing through once, then with the congregation ~

When the night becomes dark, your love, O Lord,
Is a fire; your love, O Lord, is a fire.

Reading

John 1:1-5

Advent Wreath

The candles of the Advent wreath represent the four Sundays of Advent, a time of hopeful expectation. They have been variously named; each one brings us closer to Christmas, to the Incarnation, to the Light of the World. Each one is lit in hope, remembering that He who came at Bethlehem is coming again, to fill our world with the light of His presence.

Call to Worship

Isaiah 60:1-5

Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

Behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
And thick darkness the peoples;

But the Lord will arise upon you,
And his glory will be seen upon you.

And nations shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

Lift up your eyes round about and see;
They all gather together, they come to you;

Your sons shall come from far,
And your daughters shall be carried in their arms.

Then shall you see and be radiant,

Your heart shall thrill and rejoice!

Greeting

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

Your love, O Lord, is a fire. May it burn brightly in our hearts, filling our lives with the warmth of your love, and giving light to our days. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Hymn

Eternal Flame

John 1:9-14

Jesus is the eternal Word of God. All things began in Him; all things end in him. He is both our source and our completion. The eternal flame remind us of this fact - that he is true man, yet very God, the Light of all creation.

Christ Candle

John 1:14,16-18

"True God from true God, begotten, not made." Yet he took on human form and, as Paul tells us, 'being found in human form, humbled himself, taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death on a cross." The Christ candle reminds us of Immanuel, the God who is with us, whose Spirit lights our daily path.

Altar Candles

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The Altar Candles remind us of Christ's real presence, especially that presence we celebrate in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Jesus was born, not only to live with us, to be our Savior, to die for us - but also that He might live forever in our hearts. As we take and eat, as we take and drink, we are united with His life, and united with one another in His Spirit.

Pulpit

Psalm 119:105

Tonight we will light one more candle - one from the Pulpit, representing God's Word. The Word that God spoke over creation, the Living Word of Christ, is also a proclaimed Word, a shared Word. Paul says, "How are they to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'Who beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!'" We light this candle remembering the precious gift of the Gospel, shared among us.

Call to be Light in the World

You are the light of the world.

A city on a hill cannot be hid.

No one, lighting a lamp, puts it under a bed,

But puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.

God has called us to be light to the world, to fill our hearts with His light,
That it may shine through all creation.
As we go out into the world, may His light go with us,
May it shine through us,
until every dark corner of the world
Is filled with His light - the Light of His incarnation and of His presence.

May He use our witness and our gifts to bring into the world
These things we celebrate this Advent season:
Hope, joy, peace and love.

Benediction

Go in peace. Serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
