The Three Temptations
~ a small play for Lent 1 based on Luke 4:1-13~
Needed: Narrator, Dad, Mom, and Child (teenager) in contemporary clothing.
Narrator: Then Jesus. Being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
(The family - Dad, Mom and Child - comes out and takes positions, facing one another; they are in the middle of a heated argument.)
Narrator: And the devil said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'"
Dad: The school called today. They said you were caught cheating on a test! How could you! I slave away all day like a fool, to put bread on the table and keep a roof over our heads, and this is the way you treat me! If you think I'm going to support you forever, so you can run around with your friends rather than studying, you've got another thought coming! You can just forget about your allowance this month, and turn in the keys for the car. It's time you learned the value of money and good hard work!
Narrator: Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and all their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours." But Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind me Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"
Child: Well, I was just doing what everyone else does! I mean, how am I supposed to compete? How am I supposed to get to college and get a good job if I don't cheat a little? A lot of kids do worse than that! At least I'm not selling drugs or something!
Narrator: Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, sat Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He shall give his angels charge over You, to keep You,' and 'In their hands they shall bear You up lest You dash Your foot against a stone.'" And Jesus answered and said to him, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Mom: I just can't believe that you could do this to us! What will Peggy and Martha think? I'll bet by now everyone in town knows about it! You've humiliated your father and I! What kind of parents will people think we are? What will the people in church think? I can't believe you embarrassed us like this!
Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
